GRANITAN S103,
as used at present for the machine bases has excellent
physical properties and presents essential advantages over other
materials such as: -
Excellent dampening properties
Granitan S103 has 6 - 8 times
better dampening properties than cast iron.
This
allows you to get better grinding finishes an higher speeds.
  |
| Excellent
thermal properties
The curve below illustrates the
advantage of the 3 times greater temperature-time
constant of a Granitan base in comparison to grey cast
iron. Granitan reacts to short term temperature
changes, based on environmental influences and the
grinding process itself, much slower and much less.
This feature gives the machine an unbeatable
'tolerance holding' capability throughout the whole
day. |

Favourable
chemical properties
Another advantage
Granitan S103 has over other machine base materials is
the chemical resistance against cooling-lubricant,
cutting oil and detergents. There is no risk of
corrosion or damage from coming into contact with
these liquids. |

No foundation needed
Because of the extra rigid machine base made of
Granitan, no particular foundation is needed. Simply
place it down and it is ready to go! |
 Guide-ways
Studer's patented 'knopped' guide ways
made of Granitan S200 are so precisely aligned that straightness
values of less than 2.5 per 650mm length in the cylindrical
grinding process can be achieved. The slides move on the 'knops'
at an almost linear power-speed ratio, thus positively influencing
the control of the axis. The slide does not even float at rapid
traverse speeds.
