STUDER hands over 125th S33 to MAPAL Präzisionswerkzeuge Dr. Kress KG

Just over a year after launching the S33 universal CNC grinding machine on the market, Fritz Studer AG, Thun, has now finished the 125th machine of this type. The customer is MAPAL Präzisionswerkzeuge, Dr. Kress KG. To mark this milestone, a special ceremony was staged at the STUDER premises in Thun on August 26 to hand over this machine personally to Dr. Kress, the owner and manager of MAPAL.

"The overwhelming success of the S33 was something of a surprise to us. Our goal was to create a highly flexible CNC machine as a starter model in STUDER quality at an appealing price and to offer an extensive range of optional accessories so the machine could be adapted to the customer’s specific needs. We came up with a number of innovations to assure the easiest possible programming and operation. For instance, the S33 can be converted from a shaft part to a chuck part in less than 2 minutes. Apparently we created just the machine our customers were looking for," said Dr. Heinz-Jürgen Prokop, managing director of Fritz Studer AG, in his welcome speech.

MAPAL Präzisionswerkzeuge Dr. Kress KG first opened its doors for business in 1950 with an idea that was revolutionary at time: processing boreholes with cutting reamers. Over the years MAPAL has developed into a full-range supplier of tools for cubic finished parts. Headquartered in Aalen, MAPAL now has more than 20 subsidiaries worldwide and over 2300 employees. With its strong corporate culture of innovation, the company has an extensive range of services as well as production sites which are close and responsive to customers. These traits should continue to assure its success in the future.

MAPAL and STUDER have been close partners for 27 years. Over these nearly three decades, MAPAL has bought a total of 176 STUDER grinding machines, which operate today in MAPAL factories around the globe. But this collaboration has gone far beyond machine purchases. The demanding tasks involved in the production of precision tools have given rise to new ideas time and again, ideas that, in turn, led to new functions and subassemblies on STUDER machines. The two partners have also taken new approaches in after sales services. For instance, services between MAPAL and STUDER are now billed in an annual lump-sum, which is then adjusted in the following year on the basis of the actual results. Experience gained in this area gave rise to new service products at STUDER, such as STUDER Service Subscriptions, STUDER Service Agreements and STUDER Product Support. All three of these products are highly successful today.

"Throughout all those many years STUDER always listened carefully to us and was able to implement many of our requests and ideas. This is just one more reason that I have remained so loyal to STUDER all these years," explained Dr. Kress at the hand-over ceremony.
